Employee Spotlight: Meet Abel
Q: Abel, where are you from?
Q: But…you’re a Cubs fan?
A: Yes, but pretty much my entire family supports the Chicago White Sox. My cousin was a huge Cubs fan so that’s part of the reason I cheer on the Cubs. I invited my family and friends over to watch the World Series Game and celebrated the championship win in Wrigleyville with them afterwards.
Q: What did you study in college and why?
A: Computer engineering. Growing up, I was always interested in computers and frequently experimented with laptops, phones, and gadgets – I loved opening them all up! I took an introduction to computer science course in high school and was taught basic game programming and I absolutely loved it!
Q: Why did you decide to join Sertifi?
A: I like that it’s small enough so I can come in as a Junior Developer and have meaningful contributions from day 1. The development team has an emphasis towards using the newest technologies and tools. To stay relevant, you need to adapt.
Q: How was the interview process?
A: The team did an excellent job of making me feel comfortable and relaxed. They provided me with a lot of feedback during and after the interview. Overall, it was a great experience.
Q: What does your day to day look like?
A: We have a daily scrum meeting. We discuss what we worked on the previous day and check the current sprint. We may meet in the afternoon to go over code reviews and bounce ideas off one another.
Q: What’s your favorite part of your job?
A: I love coding and the release dates. It’s really exciting to see customers using a feature that you’ve implemented and getting feedback from customers on what they like most. It’s nice to see a customer email come in that says how much they love the product!
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I do MMA after work – it’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. I love it because it’s a great workout and stress reliever and teaches me self defense. I’d like to compete one day. I also enjoy reading self-help books like “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. It’s a great way to continue to learn every day.
Q: How do you see your career evolving at Sertifi?
A: Coming in as a Junior Developer, the team has done a great job of providing me with resources I need to excel. The small company size allows me to grow with the company and the team. I love working with our customers, so I’d like to get to know them better and grow more into a client-facing role.
